Parents engaged in the hard but rewarding job of caring for an eating disorder patient often ask for help with finding nourishing, delicious foods that meet the high-calorie and nutrient rich requirements of the recovering body. Instead of being afraid of food, we embrace the challenge, the tradition, and yes even the JOY of eating. Instead of seeking ways to avoid calories, we seek dense foods. There is no hiding or sneaking here: our children need to restore their bodies and at the same time their brains. They need to re-learn enjoying a wide range of foods, and how to nourish their healthy bodies.
All eating disorder patients require a high level of nourishment during recovery and afterward to restore rational thought and behaviors. Anorexia patients often have a great deficit of health and weight to recover, and suffer from increased needs as the process begins. Bulimia patients require balanced and regular nutrition to re-learn normal behaviors and stability.
The F.E.A.S.T. Family Recipe book is an ongoing project to collect family recipes from the parents of the F.E.A.S.T. and A.T.D.T. community, especially those dishes they found most helpful and delicious.
Click the online current version of the book, and check back often to check for updates. You can also purchase a paper version of the book, and we welcome you to buy copies for yourself and for family, friends, community members, teachers, coaches, and the professionals treating your child.
