Mobile-Phone App Research Study for Teens & Young Adults (USA)

Researchers at the University of Kansas are currently recruiting for a new study to test a new
mobile-phone app designed to improve treatment outcomes for teens and young adults
stepping down from intensive treatment for anorexia nervosa. The app is designed to provide
interactive, adaptive mHealth directly to the teen or young adult. The app also updates
therapists each week about their patient’s treatment progress and alerts them about risk of
relapse.

We are seeking teens and young adults between the ages of 13-21 years that have received
acute treatment (residential, inpatient, PHP, or IOP) for anorexia nervosa or a related eating
disorder within the past 18 months and are currently receiving (or planning to start) weekly
outpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa. Teens and young adults must also have access to a
smartphone, read and speak fluent English, be medically stable, and have no intellectual or
developmental disability, current psychotic disorder, or medical condition that affects appetite or weight.

Study procedures include questionnaires, interviews, and downloading and using the mobile
phone app to complete weekly surveys. Depending on what group they are randomly assigned
to, teens and young adults will either review 2-3 treatment modules or complete a few daily
diary reports each week as well. Their outpatient therapist will review their survey responses
and app content during the study. Use of the mobile app will last 12 weeks, with follow up
surveys at 3- and 6- months after the app ends. The risk of participating in this study is no
greater than present in routine psychological testing. Participants will be compensated for their participation in the research study.
