UK Taskforce Experts at your Table event

A half day conference for parents and professionals packed full of information and practical tools on how parents around the world are shifting anxiety to confidence during eating disorder recovery. 

This is an opportunity for carers to meet, network and learn from other carers and for clinicians to learn tips on how to engage carers and families.

2:30 pm "Finding Your Mojo: Families families taking the lead in eating disorder treatment

Belinda Caldwell, Executive Director of FEAST, Carer Consultant and Project Manager, Victorian Centre of Excellence in Eating Disorders, AUS  

F.E.A.S.T stands for Families EMPOWERED and supporting treatment of eating disorders but how do you go from frightened parent to team leader, how do you turn your fear into action. Belinda will speak from her experience on;

  • the importance of families finding their mojo
  • what enabled our family to find our mojo in our daughter's recovery
  • what we as families need to hear to get our mojos working again at the beginning of our journey and when we get stuck
  • supporting other families to find their own mojo through structured and informal peer support
  • how clinicians can support families to find their mojo
  • the importance of mojo in working towards long term recovery and how to maintain it

3:30 pm "Carer challenges - they’re international!"

Nicki Wilson, Chair EDANZ, Auckland New Zealand

Drawing from her experience supporting and advocating for parents and others caring for patients, in her roles with the Eating Disorders Association of New Zealand (EDANZ) and FEAST, Nicki will be exploring some of the most common challenges faced by carers. Discussing obstacles and barriers to recovery that are seen to impact on families wherever they live the world, Nicki will set out the ways people have found to address road blocks such as;

  • Treatment isn't working for us
  • Lack of coordination and cooperation with the professional team
  • Things clinicians say- this case is atypical/the hardest case/sub threshold
  • Loved one over 18
  • Transitions – school, uni, flatting, OS holiday, discharge from IP….
  • How do we know if exercise is a problem, and how do we curtail it?
  • The role school or college can play
