What is Evidence-Based Treatment?
Share |

In the last several years, families and patients researching treatment options for eating disorders have seen the term "evidence-based treatment" used more and more frequently on provider websites, on social media, in popular magazine articles, medical journals, marketing materials, and in provider CVs. Because it has become so ubiquitous, it is important for carers and patients to understand what "evidence-based treatment" really means.

Video Resource:

The following 3 minute video from the US Department of Veteren's Affairs provides a good explaination of three key components required to establish an "evidence-base" for a particular treatment:

  1. Number of research studies,
  2. Quality of research studies, and
  3. Review and agreement by experts of the studies' conclusions.

  • A single research study does not create an evidence-base.
  • Poorly constructed studies do not create an evidence-base.
  • Poorly interpretted studies do not create an evidence-base.
  • Headlines in the popular media are often false or overly-simplistic interpretations of a study's results.
