An expert by experience, Kym’s focus is unique: the sibling perspective. Her sister Kacy suffered from bulimia for over fifteen years and died from her illness in 2002. At that time, Kym became a speaker and advocate focusing on her sister’s experience. Over a decade later, Kym observed the impact on her own life and the continued lack of sibling support. In 2017, she switched her advocacy focus and made it her mission to give the sibling experience a voice by creating the website KymAdvocates.com. Her site focuses on providing diverse sibling stories through video interviews and blog posts. Recognizing most research did not focus on the impact on siblings, Kym co-created a sibling survey to gather data on their experience and support needs.
With the survey resulting in over 500 responses, reaching nine countries, and ages ranging from 9 to 70 years, Kym is actively sharing the survey results at SIGS, conferences, interviews, and articles. She is a
co-chair of AED’s Expert by Experience as well as a member of the 2021 Scientific Program Committee.
In June 2019, Kym became F.E.A.S.T.’s first Special Projects Coordinator.
